Free flight and control line models are the cheapest as they require no outlay for radio control equipment.

A radio control aircraft comprises of the aircraft, engine, and radio equipment. A comprehensive range of aircraft kits are available. Some of these require full assembly by the modeler while others are available in a form which is almost ready to fly (ARF). Prices range from $100 to $300, for the aircraft only, plus any necessary outlay for radio equipment, engine, and accessories.

A radio package would include transmitter, receiver, charger, batteries, and servos. Packages range from $150 for a basic computer radio to upwards of $800 for programmable units.

Engines range from about $100 for a small two stroke up to about $500 for a large four stroke. Electric powered flight is a popular branch of the hobby. Power systems for this option start at about $150.

If you are new to aero modelling, we strongly recommend that you talk to some of the club’s experienced flyers before you purchase any equipment. This will ensure that you acquire equipment that is suitable for use at Kelly Field, is value for money and that you start with a combination of equipment which will maximise your success and enjoyment of the hobby.

Training Opportunites

Flight simulators are available, allowing new members to get accustomed to the controls before taking the plunge and learning to fly on the real thing.

The club has trainer aircraft available for tuition.

Prospective new members can have three free flights to get a feel for flying and ascertain whether HMAC is for them.
